Bus Rapid Transit as a Solution to Traffic Problems in Cities, with a Focus on its Potential in Podgorica
2025
Modern problems related to the disproportionate increase in individual motorization compared to population growth, coupled with inadequate public transport services, make life in cities increasingly difficult. A lack of interest in alternative modes of transport has been one of the main negative trends over recent decades, particularly in cities of less developed countries, such as Montenegro. Although Podgorica, as the capital city, serves as a gravitational center not only for its surroundings but also for other cities in the country, its mobility unfortunately lacks the characteristics that would make urban life more humane. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a transport system based on bus services that offers fast, convenient, and cost-effective mobility solutions. These benefits are achieved through dedicated bus lanes, high-speed and frequent services. Therefore, a homogeneous system like BRT—integrating infrastructure, services, and benefits—has the potential to become a competitive alternative to unsustainable car-oriented mobility, which remains a primary driver of socioeconomic inequality and climate change impacts globally. Such a system could redefine the very identity of urban transport in the city.
